Does Roy Chiu Sing on Easy Fortune Happy Life
Information technology's no hugger-mugger that Roy Chiu is 1 of the main focuses of my LJ. I actually only started watching his dramas 2 years agone (January 22, 2011, to exist exact), but he recently surpassed Huang Xiaoming as Nigh Frequently Tagged Person in my posts and, starting last summer, pretty much cemented his position equally number ane on my bias list.
With that said, I've only seen his more recent stuff (2011 and onward), so what kind of a fan would I exist if I didn't go through some of his older works? Now that Miss Rose finally finished, I accept a Roy void to fill, so I decided to tackle some of his previous modern dramas. Tbh, I don't have high expectations for any of these, but for Roy, it'due south worth it.
First upward is The Girl in Blueish , a 2010 drama he did with Chen Qiao'en and Feng Shaofeng. I... admittedly cringed the get-go time I saw pictures of this drama, because they gave Roy a freakin' hairstyle that looks like this:
Now, Roy looks good sporting but well-nigh any hairstyle, but I lean heavily toward make clean and short. Yet, I've seen worse (like his 'practise in Piece of cake Fortune Happy Life), and then this was just a momentary setback. Full speed ahead!
Brief Recap
I'thousand only one episode in, so the plot hasn't been completely laid out yet, although the DramaWiki summary reveals quite a bit. In terms of characters, we take You Jiaqi (Chen Qiao'en), who is the business manager of Daming Advertising Visitor and the go-to-person when an event has a crisis. Ruan Zhengdong (Roy Chiu) is Lianyi Corporation'south general manager (and also racing driver on the side, lol), and he'south practiced friends with Meng Heping (Feng Shaofeng), who'south recently returned to the country for some unknown reason. Ruan Jiangxi (Lu Chen) is Zhengdong's little sister and quite smitten with Heping, although I don't think he really notices.
The plot of the kickoff episode involves a welcoming outcome for Zhengdong, in which ii models are unable to arrive so Jiaqi and her friend Jing'an are forced to apparel up in racegirl uniforms and wave poms poms around as Zhengdong makes a speech. Heping also makes an advent at the outcome to show support for his friend, and Jiaqi catches a glimpse of him and wonders if it'southward really him.
During a frantic photograph session, Jiaqi accidentally trips and falls, only to exist caught by Zhengdong (Fated to Dear You lot reference?). Zhengdong afterwards makes it pretty obvious that he doesn't want Heping seeing Jiaqi, for an unstated reason equally of yet. Heping and so goes off with Zhengdong'south sister, makes a visit to his quondam apartment to drop off his luggage, and then pays a visit to his parents.
Zhengdong invites Daming's employees to a party that evening, merely Jiaqi'due south boss sees this every bit an opportunity to get him to agree to a contract they desire him to sign. Of course, the responsibility gets shoved on Jiaqi, who deduces that it'due south useless getting him to agree to sign the contract that evening because he's drinking so much and dancing it up with the girls. Here is an ambrosial picture of Roy, because what else is this weblog for?
(Apologies for LQ screencaps -- as much as I would similar to share HQ pics of Roy, it's not happening with the older dramas.)
Crazy ex-girlfriend turns up at the dance and starts shoving girls aside, which puts a damper on the festivities. Zhengdong tries to ignore her, since she's merely causing unneeded chaos, which pisses her off and makes her catch a glass of wine and toss the contents in his face up. Jiaqi, who is standing a little behind Zhengdong, gets vino on her newly bought wear and starts freaking out, but who cares about some ruined clothes when you get to come across moisture!Roy?
Anyway, Zhengdong later offers to pay for the clothing damages, except Jiaqi is all distracted considering she sees him light upward a cigarette, in the exact aforementioned way Meng Heping used to do it. (The whole fourth dimension I'm thinking "GET THAT UGLY CIGARETTE Abroad FROM YOURSELF, ROYYYYY.") She wants to buy the matchbox from him, and Zhengdong suggests they play a game to see who can concord on to a burning match for longer without letting go. Obviously Jiaqi and Heping played this game earlier.
Jiaqi wins the game, except she'southward busy remembering her previous game with Heping, where he grabbed her hand and blew out her match so she wouldn't fire herself. Zhengdong admits defeat, tosses her the matchbox, and walks off. He later types out "The game is about to start" on a computer screen, although it'south not articulate who he'southward sending this to.
The adjacent day Jiaqi and Jing'an become chewed out by their lady boss for not getting the contract signed, just then Jiaqi gets a bouquet of roses from Zhengdong. Her friend is excited for her, merely Jiaqi says it'southward merely so he won't accept to pay for her ruined clothes. And...episode end.
Thoughts
This isn't the most engaging pilot episode I've seen, which isn't surprising since cdrama episodes ordinarily air two at a fourth dimension, so yous usually have to stick through the first two episodes to really go a feel for where it'south all going. Nevertheless, I'm getting enough Roy on my screen to continue watching, and the not-all the same-revealed relationship between the three mains is a little intriguing. I don't find Jiaqi or Heping interesting at all, unfortunately, but oh well.
Despite a more often than not average first impression, I'm pretty sure I'll end up finishing this one, since information technology'southward directed past Shen Yi, who also directed My Girl and Waking Dear Upwards , two of Roy's 2011 cdramas that I rather enjoyed. Objectively, neither of these dramas are that bang-up, and I wouldn't recommend watching them unless y'all're a big fan of at to the lowest degree ane of the actors, but they're good enough for me since they featured a lot of Roy. Then here'south hoping TGIB will plough out the same.
On a related note, Roy's dubber in this is Bian Jiang, who also dubbed his voice in My Daughter. I know information technology'south pretty much social suicide in the drama fandom to say you liked a dubbed vox, especially when Roy'due south voice is the 1 getting dubbed, but this guy's vocalization is HOT. I would plainly prefer Roy to be undubbed, but as things go, Bian Jiang is one of the better options. Plus he does angst particularly well, and I'thousand sure nosotros'll have tons of that here.
Feng Shaofeng, on the other mitt, is dubbed by Jiang Guangtao, a proper name that didn't audio familiar until I looked at his Baike page. And, um, he dubbed Nicky Wu equally the titular character in Xiao Shiyi Lang . Which is my favorite drama of all time, modern or period. This guy must be super talented, because it actually took me a while to effigy out that Nicky was dubbed in XSYL, which is saying a lot since anyone who'southward heard Nicky speak or sing knows that he has a pretty unique vocalisation. Of course, Jiang Guangtao continues the talent in TGIB by sounding naught like Nicky.
